Tuxedo Selection Guide
As you ponder
which tuxedo to select. Consider the following points to help determine your
formalwear needs. Your decision will be based on the formality of your wedding,
whether you prefer traditional styles or contemporary trends and your personal
taste.
TIME OF YEAR - Spring,
Summer - white ivory and other light colors are appropriate. Black and grey are
always a great choice. Fall, Winter - darker greys and black are more
appropriate.
TIME OF CEREMONY -
Traditionally speaking, a ceremony before 4 p.m. is considered daytime. A
ceremony after 4 p.m. is an evening affair.
Formality of the bride and
bridesmaidsif your bride is choosing a traditional and formal gown, the
tuxedos should complement by considering the ultra formal looks outlined below.
If her gown and those of the bridesmaids are on the informal side, the choices
are more relaxed for the tuxedos.
TRADITIONAL
APPROACH Yes, there are respected traditions to follow in the
selections of your men's formalwear. Your individual choices should be based on
the time of your ceremony, the season, and the need for formality.
ULTRAFORMAL This look
creates the most formal wedding you can plan. It centers around the Black Full
Dress Tailcoat with a white vest and tie for the groom and his wedding party
(fathers included). At your option, the guests can be outfitted in a similar
full dress look or a slightly less formal tuxedo. Gloves, top hats and canes
are often used.
FORMAL EVENING The
groom can choose from a black tuxedo year-round or a white dinner jacket for
warmer weather. Both can utilize complementary accessories. The men in the
wedding party dress the same as the groom, perhaps with different accessories
or a boutonniere. "Black Tie Invited" is recommended for the guests.
ULTRAFORMAL DAYTIME
This look utilizes the "morning suit" and is recommended for weddings before 4
p.m. The groom is dressed in the cutaway coat with striped trousers, a grey
vest, striped ascot or a 4-in-hand tie. The attendants and fathers are
outfitted the same, or they may choose the matching stroller coat with possible
variation in the tie and shirt.
FORMAL DAYTIME With a ceremony before 4
p.m. the groom chooses a grey stroller with striped trousers, pearl vest,
4-in-hand tie with a white laydown collar shirt the ushers and fathers are
dressed identical to the groom with a different boutonniere.
CONTEMPORARY TRENDS The contemporary look allows
tuxedos to be selected with modern interpretations of the formal dress codes.
This category's guidelines are relaxed with freedom of choice. These styles
include multiple button fronts, long length coats with fashion lapel
treatments.
ULTRAFORMAL EVENING
With this look grooms can choose from a black, white, grey or colored tailcoat
add matching accessories, or formal white. The ushers' style will be similar
with the most formal look sporting identical tailcoats. Vest and ties can be
used to coordinate with the bridesmaids' dresses. Fathers can be outfitted
identically to the ushers or in matching tuxedos. As an added plus, "Black Tie

look is the proper choice when you want to express your personal preferences.
Grooms can choose from updated styles featuring fashion lapels, multiple
buttons and longer lengths. New fashion shirts, vest and shoes can help you
choose your individual style. The wedding party can be dressed similar to the
groom, but if the groom chooses tails or long coat to stand out the ushers may
wear similar tuxedos. Fathers can choose coordinating tuxedos, and the guests
are invited to dress black tie.
ULTRAFORMAL DAYTIME
This features a traditional daytime look with a modern twist. The groom dresses
in an updated cutaway with pleated, striped or matching trousers. The ushers
dress in matching stroll coats, which really sets the groom apart. Father has a
choice of either style.
FORMAL DAYTIME This
is THE most popular style for today's weddings. You set the style! The groom's
choices include ALL types of formalwear in any color. Ushers can match the
groom or utilize tail and tuxedo combinations. Colored accessories complement
the bridesmaids' dresses, while the fathers choose coordinating formalwear.
Guests are welcome to wear black tuxedos with fashion accessories.
What to wear when it's a
Quinceañera. Quinceañera is a traditional Latino
celebration of a young woman's 15th birthday marking her passage from childhood
to womanhood. The celebration begins with a religious ceremony and is followed
by a large reception.
Traditionally the celebrant or
Quinceañera wears an extravagant white or pale pink gown although she
may choose any color she wishes. The Quinceañera's escort can wear
either a back or white tuxedo depending on personal taste. He can choose
accessories such as cummerbund, vest, bow tie and top had, to match and accent
her dress.
The Quinceañera's court traditionally
consists of fourteen girls (damas) and fourteen boys (chambelanes); each
representing a year of the Quinceañera life. Today seven couples are
more common. The damas' wear matching dresses, which are most often pastel
pink, light blue or lavender. The chambelanes wear matching tuxedoes, which are
usually black or white with accessories such as cummerbunds or vests to match

What to wear when it's a
Black Tie Event
When the invitation reads "Black Tie" the
guest is asked to dress in a tuxedo. Most gentlemen feel comfortable choosing a
timeless classic tuxedo such as a back notch or peak collar tuxedo. Choices
available include a one, two or three button front. All are appropriate: it's a
matter of taste. Each designer offers a variety of enhancements to the basic
tuxedo.
As for
accessories, although the term is "Black Tie"", he does not have to
wear black accessories, any tuxedo accessory with color may be worn. Many
customers personalize their look with a vest and tie in platinum, champagne or
burgundy. Generally, a woman and her escort do not match colors.
An ultra formal invitation will read
"White Tie." The guests are asked to wear the traditional black full
dress jacket with white tie and vest. Choosing a notch or peak lapel tailcoat;
the perfect vest option is the piquè, featuring a "waffle-like" texture.
White gloves and a cane are appropriate for debutant balls.
